Scottish Topper Traveller Circuit

Every sailing season the International Topper Class Association (ITCA) and the Scottish Topper Class Association (STCA) organise a series of races around the country. The Scottish events are called the Topper Traveller Series (TT).

This year we are also running the first Scottish Youth Sailing Series (SYS) at the same time which will be for Lasers, Oppies, 420’s, 29er’s and Toppers.

At all events Optimists and Lasers race in their own class start. So if you have an Oppie and a topper or laser sailor in the family they can all attend!

The travellers are great fun giving you the chance to sail at different clubs around the country. It is often possible to camp at the clubs and everyone is very welcoming and friendly. The clubs run kitchens too providing breakfast rolls and usually an evening meal and Social evening 🙂 !

At each event the will be a main fleet racing for the more experienced sailors. This fleet is normally between 20 – 30 boats. There is also a development fleet which sails a simple triangular course close to shore. This is for those who are racing for the first time on the circuit. The scores for each event and fleet are added together to give an overall prize for the series.

Each event costs £20-25 to enter. For that the children get 2 days of racing with full safety cover. You are free to chill out while you watch the racing and it has been known to have a glass of wine or two.

You do not have to do all the events and you can dip in and out as you please. There are also discards for the series and many folk don’t manage to do every event.

The Brown Cup in June is another great event held at Loch Earn Sailing Club- again not too far. The first two days are training – and the Monday –yes a day off School to go sailing!- is a schools race. For those going for the full weekend it is a great experience camping at Loch Earn for the weekend.

As much as the kids get out of the sailing, they will also enjoy and remember the weekends camping, meeting other young sailors and having a ball.

If you require any further info regarding Toppers & the Events please contact Graham Dingley at arearep.scotland@gbrtopper.co.uk.

You do need to join ITCA, this is an easy process (use the link above – ‘memberships’) it costs £33 for the first sailor and £11 for additional sailors. For larger events you will need a unique number called your Championship Number which you put on the bottom of your sail. This you get by applying to ITCA and as long as you renew your membership each year, this number stays with you.
