Most sailors have experienced clanging halyards keeping them awake all night long. Imagine if you had to live with clanging halyards all winter. We have been a bit negligent in recent years reminding our members of the importance of considering our neighbours near and far (because the noise does travel far up The Wynd) and tying back your halyards so they do not bang off your mast.
The preferred approach for all boats would be dropping their mast for the winter, as that removes the problem altogether. It also deals with wind whistling through the rigging. We know that is not possible on the larger keelboats, but we are going to insist this coming winter all dingy masts are dropped for the winter, effective after the last race in the winter series – 13th December.
We are doing all of this in response to neighbour complaints regarding recent years, so please support your club and take action to address as you put your boat away for the winter.
